FAQs

Do all ACL tears require surgery?
Not always. Some patients do well with structured rehab, while others benefit from reconstruction based on instability, sport demands, associated injuries, and long-term goals.

Is a meniscus tear always surgical?
No. Many tears improve with the right plan. Surgery may be recommended when symptoms persist, the knee catches/locks, or certain tear patterns interfere with function and activity.

Can rotator cuff injuries improve without surgery?
Often, yes—especially with a targeted program that restores motion, strength, and mechanics. Surgery may be recommended when weakness, tear pattern, or persistent symptoms limit function.

What is Tommy John surgery?
“Tommy John” commonly refers to UCL reconstruction—a procedure used when the elbow’s stabilizing ligament cannot support throwing or high-demand activity despite appropriate non-surgical care. UCL surgery can be done from a “repair” or “reconstruction” approach and this decision is made on a patient to patient basis.

Is PRP the same as a steroid injection?
No. Steroid injections are often used to calm inflammation and pain. PRP is a biologic option derived from your own blood that may be considered for select diagnoses as part of a larger rehab and recovery strategy.

What if I’ve already been told I “need surgery”?
A second opinion can confirm the diagnosis and ensure you understand all options. If surgery is appropriate, we’ll explain why and outline a clear recovery plan and timeline.
