A board-certified neurosurgeon with fellowship training in orthopaedic spine surgery, Dr. Joan O’Shea has dedicated her career to treating spinal disorders. She earned her medical degree at State University of New York, Upstate Health Center in Syracuse, NY. Dr. O’Shea completed an orthopaedic spine surgery fellowship after full neurosurgical training, performing innovative, state of the art procedures in residency and neurosurgical programs, at some of the world’s most distinguished spine surgery centers: Mount Sinai Medical Center NYC, NY Hospital for Joint Diseases and The Spine Institute of New York at Beth Israel Medical Center. During her fellowships, Dr. O’Shea worked as an assistant physician under the direction of Dr. Michael Neuwirth, Gloria Estefan’s surgeon and also with Dr. Martin Camins, former New York Jet defensive lineman Dennis Byrd’s surgeon.

With an exemplary reputation for innovation in her field, earned through her world-class training, Dr. O’Shea’s conservative approach to treating symptoms and conditions in the management of back, neck and spine pain, have contributed towards over twenty years of clinical expertise, using the most advanced minimally invasive spine surgery techniques in the country. Implementing innovative, minimally invasive surgical skills, maintaining the anatomy of core muscles, supports her philosophy of and belief in the importance of a strong body core. Dr. O’Shea’s caring bedside manner, superior knowledge of spine health and close involvement in every stage of patient care, have earned her the respect and admiration of colleagues and patients throughout the nation.

Dr. O’Shea practiced neurosurgery at Cooper Trauma and Medical Center in Camden, NJ. Introducing innovative treatment solutions, she founded and practices at The Spine Institute of Southern New Jersey in Marlton, NJ, which she opened in 2001, specializing in elective degenerative treatments such as minimally invasive lower back fusions and artificial disc replacement surgery. Dr. O’Shea opened the first outpatient ambulatory spine surgery center in South Jersey in 2005. For over fifteen years, she has been a lecturer and invited instructor to neurosurgeons at the Annual American Association of Neurologic Surgeons Meeting, teaching neurosurgeons state of the art minimally invasive spine procedures. She now lectures for NASS, teaching spine surgeons from around the country how to do same day spine surgery.
